Case Study: Alliance Group Telco Audit

Chris was thrilled with the value provided and the resulting financial benefit. While it was hoped that telco providers managed this as part of day-to-day business and optimising spend, Chris realised an intervention was needed.

He reflected that “the audit was a great result” and commended the knowledge and straight forward approach to achieve this outcome.

Client Requirements

Alliance is a world class food company, 100% owned by New Zealand farmers. They produce the quality, free range grass-fed lamb, beef, venison and co-products.  They have 4,700 staff, locations around the country and a turnover of 1.77 billion.

Alliance was in the middle of adjusting to changing market conditions and had objectives to ensure value for money, reduce complexity and improve cost allocation -  improving productivity and lowering long-term costs.

As part of this, Chris Bulovic, Alliance’s Head of Technology Operations, was looking to optimise operational costs and simplify ICT systems. Alliance has a complex mix of voice and data requirements that support their goals of maximising value to NZ Farmers.

Like many large NZ organisations their telecommunications use was complex due to:

  • Multiple sites across New Zealand

  • Strict health and safety needs

  • A mix of IT platforms, end user devices and user access requirements, including the implementation of a new ERP system.

With a significant ERP upgrade in progress and no time to conduct an internal review, Alliance sought assistance to evaluate their telecommunications services.

They wanted outcomes that were accurate, low risk and able to be implemented quickly.  Edge Consulting’s experienced consultants, with their deep industry knowledge and independent approach, provided a reliable solution for outsourcing this task.

Our Deliverable

Edge conducted a Telco Audit, reviewing Alliance’s fixed and mobile voice and data services from multiple suppliers, including their contracts and invoice data.

As part of this service, we aligned complex and disjointed services with business units, and understood the capacity needed versus what is provided.

Once we had a full and accurate picture, we reviewed these against industry norms and made recommendations to improve both cost and performance, while simplifying services to make them easier to manage. As well as recommendations across the services, we found services still being charged despite alternative solutions being in place.

Our Solution

As a result of the Audit and recommendations Alliance gained visibility of what they were paying for versus what was needed and were able to save both money and future management time.

Chris Bulovic said he was “rapt” with the service, which met his goals of both cost savings and simplification.

“It took about 30 minutes for an initial discussion,...[and a] final meeting to review findings and consider next steps. It was painless"

Chris reflected that with many competing priorities, it is hard to understand what the risks are when changes are made. Having a professional review things meant that they could:

“make confident decisions, allowing changes to be made easily and quickly.”
